Does anyone have any suggestions for how/where I could route/place a permanant connection (well plug at least) for my GPS (which I plan to have in a tank bag).
Currently have an OEM top box, the base of which is bolted into the place of the pillion seat, so I'd like an alternative to using a plug under there. Had though about putting it on the fairing or sometin. But I'm a little bit worried about exposure to the elements. Any thoughts??? |

I used a cig lighter socket under my pillion seat with an in line fuse, It's used for charging the battery, For running the air bed pump when I'm on bike rallies and charging my mobile if it is flat!

You can get the water proof one from HG i think then you could mount it to the out side.

That's the kind of thing I was thinking of, but not sure if I trust the "waterproof" socket enough, espicially if I plan to use them (ie have something plugged in) in bad weather.

Billy's idea of mounting it under the pillion seat means it'll stay dry regardless but if you want a wire to go to the front of the bike for a GPS system, what about mounting it on the inside of the fairing? Should keep the worst of the crud off it and it's quite a neat solution if you take the time to run the wires under the seat, tank and frame following the existing wiring?

I have a PDA/GPS with a 12Vdc cigarette lighter adapter. Like Billy I used a cig lighter socket (under my riding seat though) with an in line fuse for safety. I keep the socket there nice and dry. The lead which came with my GPS is then routed under my frame and kept in position with tie wraps. You could then put the gps in the top part of your tank bag. When I did this i could'nt see the map properly though from the glare. Best purchase a ball mount and cover the gps in a plastic bag fastened with some rubber bands if raining.

I would go for the underseat option, but the mount for the top box goes in place of the seat and is bolted there, so it's not a very viable quick option.
I have used the sat nav in tank-bag without problems before (in fact I found having it not directly in sight less of a distraction)-but its battery life is limited. Guess I'll have a look at the sockets & see how waterproof they are (connected and not connected). |
