Default Accident causes

This might not shock some, but it might be interesting non-the-less.

I'm sat here watching a pretty interesting programme about the proposed new Road Taxing policy.

There was a section that raised my eyebrow. Accident contributory factors:
  • 5% over speed limit
  • 17% under speed limit too fast for conditions
  • 66% driver inattention, 23% of all accidents are contributed to a driver simply "not looking."
Almost 5 times the accidents caused by breaking the speed limits, were people just NOT looking. That's those that actually admitted it. Frig me!

It was also interesting to hear that Cardiff would probably be a trial area for the Road Taxing. However, the Welsh Assembly don't really want to bother implimenting it across all of Wales, because there's no real congestion issues. Also, it's solely the Welsh Assembly that define where the road taxation is used.

Ace! It could work out that I don't have to pay it, at all, ever

Baph, this is nothing new. Speeding is a very low causatory factor, most of accidents are caused by inattention, looked but didn't see, failure to anticipate, that sort of thing. But speeding does make an accident worse, and is a major factor when it comes to KSIs. There's an interesting research paper on this on the Department of Transport's website, will see if I can track down the link.

What it really means is that the entire speed camera edifice is built on blatant fraud.

Yup, I know it's all nothing new. Well, except the fact that not looking is 5 times more likely to make me taste tarmac than speed is. I didn't know the gap was so large.

I did like it when the Welsh Transport Minister said "I have made it publically known before, and will do now, and again in future, I want more policing on the roads, and less speed cameras"
