Question Flip front helmets and trackdays...

Hi,

My friend has talked me into doing the Calafornia Superbike School level one. This has a very strong probability of following onto trackday visits. The superbike school's confirmation letter says that your helmet must carry an ACU gold sticker on it but concidering the ACU reccommend most lids i find i need to answer the question ... Are flip front lids allowed on track?

I currently have a Caberg Justisamo which i'm intending to replace soon anyway but this has a ACU gold sticker on it. I've asked my local bike store (P&H in Crawley) and the different members of staff couldn't decide yes or no, but ending up with the 'best to use a full face one anyway' line.

I like a flip front lid for commuting as you can lift it up if you need some fresh air at traffic lights, you need to cough and most importantly convenience as i wear glasses. However i tried on a load of lids at P&H and tried on the new Shoei Flip front one and wasn't too happy with the fit. I tried a XR1000 (i think) but this is a full face lid and it fitted spot on. It has cut outs for my glasses and has padding in the chin (Flip front one doesn't and forgot how comfy having padding is). The big question is do i buy a full face lid and loose the convieniance of a flip front, or do i buy a flip front again and get rejected by the scrutineers?

Thanks in advance...
Chris

Chris, why don't you ring up/email and get an answer from the horses mouth, so to speak.

I would think the answer would be "No Flip.." myself.

I rang up the school and they said it would be ok so long as it has the ACU stiicker on it, but i'm wondering what other track day events rules would be...

I wholesaled helmets to bike dealers for years and have been involved with helmet design and manufacture with a well known UK based company, you'd never catch me wearing a flip-front under any circumstances - you'd be better off with an open face and goggles, seriously.

Indeed, weather you're allowed or not, I'd never use a flip on track, in fact I'd even go so far as to buy one of those cheap busters £30 jobs just for the track, if money was tight.

I can see the advantages on the road, well in town anyway, but I always treat them as open face with a flip down visor.

Cheers Mark.

That's intresting, i've been torn between replacing my current flip front with a shoei multitec or the XR1000. I think i'll probably go with the XR1000 as it is a good fit as well.
