Apparently the long summer break was designed to ensure kids could help with the harvest.
Now they just play on the playstation. Lazy gits. Me? I just surf forums while I should be working ![]() |

Yep, holidays should be shortened.
This from someone off work (injury) and two kids on half term and a teacher wife also off, mithering about "oh, you could get that new patio, driveway, room decorated" etc etc etc! Around here, they are off for a week now, then seven weeks in the summer. Eeee, when I were a lad, flat 'at, wippet, braaan bread (not Hovis!) we were lucky to get evining off for dinner and were pleased wi'that!

Make em work all year round!
Not much problem with the current system really, think theres more pressing issues with the education system. |

When the kids are young (eg, Primary school), I reckon the balance is just about right for holidays.
Secondary school (11years+) I think that holidays should be reduced. Not really to keep them working more, but at least phase in the fact that when you're working, you get sod all holidays. |

One of the arguments I heard on the tele for shortening the summer holidays was that the kids lose momentum on their learning with such a long break.
I take this point on board, but I really feel let kids be kids, they learn such a lot playing out on their bikes etc in the summer. My 6 year old is taking his bike apart at the mo, learn how to use a screw driver, tools etc. .... that you just dont get at school. Once I have worked out my working arragements I like having them at home, and its easier in the summer when the weather is ok, rather then in the p**sing down rain earlier on in the year. |

A child doesn't stop learning when they leave the classroom imo. Indeed, alot about the world can't be learnt without getting out and experiencing it.
Therefore I reckon that holidays are right the way they are. |

Probably stagger the holidays a bit more like they do in the USA. That way, they should make those whingeing, work shy Teachers actually work full time for a full time paid job!
