Default Rev Limiter Issue?

Yesterday I was driving down the A2 at about 9-10k in 5th gear and went to change up to top gear, but found that when I rolled back onto the accelerator the revs went through the roof and hit the limiter then dropped back down - it seemed as if I weren't in gear and then had to re-select a gear.I slowed down and then went back up through the gears, just to check it wasn't something stupid I was doing, giving it a little stick, but not much more than usual and the same happened. So I slowed right down and tried again just a little lighter on the throttle and things were absolutely fine.........Any ideas?I don't drive my bike hard, I wouldn't know how to so I don't really know how or why this happened. I would really appreciate the advice.

Sounds like you hit a false neutral. Just be a bit more positive with your shifts.

Bimbling at 9-10k.......that's about 120 innit?

9-10k in 5th would be around 90-100 on my gearing.

I'm with Scoobs, I reckon you hit a false neutral. Check chain adjustment & be positive with shifting.

False neutral - how does that occur?I think my gear changing was quite progressive and definately higher revving than normal???Chain too loose?

Could be a loose chain, but liley that you didnt give the lever anough pressure - i got one the other day not being forcefull enough. Nothing to worry about!

Might try and replicate it again see if I can eliminate the lever issue, just to rule it out.It scared the crap out of me - especially as I had never heard about it before - I thought the bike was about to blow.Kev

I got 2 false neutrals at the w/e first scared the cr@p out of me going up Hartside, luckily straight ahead was away from over the edge, (even if it was the other side of the road ) The second time was much better, knowing what had happened & even though it was going downhill on a very steep hill into a hairpin realised you have just as much retardation from careful use of the rear brake as you do from the engine.
And I was so positive with my shifts I broke my (repaired) lever in 2!
