I am about to fit some Gilles Rear Sets to my bike. Question is do I need to do any bleeding of the back brake?
Is it a difficult job. Anything I need to look out for. |

No brake bleeding. It's easy.

I think it's because the instructions want you to fiddle with the banjo bolt on the rear brake m/c. I didn't bother, it was fine.

I didn't do any bleeding either, the instructions suggest moving the hose fitting round, I already had Braided lines on so the angle of the fitting was different anyway. I'm unsure if it is necessary with OE hoses.
The only mod I had to do, was turn the Brake Light mounting bracket round, and use a different plastic nut on the brake light switch cos i couldn't get enough adjustment. |

Do you need the large heavy duty spring that is attached to the rear brake pedal. (Not the smaller light switch spring the other thicker one). The instructions seem to suggest it is not needed. I thought that would be important??

You may need to swivel the banjo bolt at the rear master cylinder as per the instructions. I couldn't get mine to fit otherwise.
If you don't want to bleed the rear brake loosen the banjo just enough to move it round to the right position then tighten again. You might get a few drops of fluid come out so have a rag/tissue handy but it shouldn't adversely affect the brake. Anyways, who actually use the rear brake? ![]() |

What about the big thick spring that is on the OEM brake set up though. Is that not needed on the Gilles sets?

From memory, I don't think so. I think I still have the manuals kicking about at home, but I don't remember struggling to get the spring to fit, and I think the distance would be too great anyway. In fact no, because I remember fitting my spare spring to Sam's bike when her's went AWOL, so I had i left kicking around in the garage after fitting my Gilles.

Mine didn't use a return spring, just the spring to activate the brake light switch.
Is not having a brake return spring technically an MOT fail or something? If you want some race bike chic you could use the rubber band method to return the pedal. ![]() |
