I replaced all the standard indicator units with aftermarket ones aeons ago.
Having tried loads of different mini-indys using bulbs over the years - with various degrees of disappointment, usually within months of fitting, I'd had enough! I thought the extra outlay for LED sealed units that didnt let in water & fry themselves, blow bulbs etc. would be a worthwhile investment. The set in question is Motrax LED Arrows. Hmmm...... not so sure about them now. After 10months use both front and rear on the right side have seeped in water around the lens edge, not at the wiring - that's sealed up in a rubber bung. The result is that only half of the LED's in each of these light up now. Still as bright as before, but one has constant condensation that i cant get rid of. Both on the left work absolutely fine though. My MOT looms at the beginning of July, will these two fail it? ![]() |

I don't know about failure, but I had water seepage in my Motrax Diamonds at the end of last week.
Solved by WD40, switch cleaner, new bulbs (mine aren't LED), and vast quantities of silicon grease (part mixed with PVA). In your situation, I'd desolder the LEDs, re-solder some new ones that work (after cleaning the PCB up a little) then apply silicon to the lens cap as I have to my indicators. |

I was going to try and do that, but the lens is bonded to the body. If i force it, it's gonna crack i reckon.
I drilled a tiny hole on the underside to drain the water from inside, but you can see the rusted circuit board at the bottom. ![]() |

My indicators are fairly dim and are flush with the fairing, I just got an advisory thing at my MOT, I'm sure the mechanic said you couldn't fail on poor indicators.

I'd go with Baph's seal-em-up idea.
Would try just cleaning the back of the LED circuit board first though, perhaps just re-heat the solder joints for the wonky LED's. It's probably covererd in white crud which can short circuit the LED, or perhaps a dry joint in the soldering. LED's are in themselves sealed units and are reletively robust components. I'd be suprised if they needed to be replaced due to electronic failure...That said the legs on the LED's do have a habit of fracturing at the base of the LED if they're not fitted well, especially if they experience significant vibration. Get in to it with an old toothbrush and a solvent cleaner that doesn't leave any residue behind. Last edited by Philbo; 18-06-07 at 06:19 PM. |
