Default **** day

Couldn't have got much worse.

One of my team has an obsession about tidiness and she clears my desk when I go for a pee. She cleared away a contract and a transfer - onto another file and couldn't remember which one. So we had a needle in a haystack hunt for it as we were completing on it today. Then we've been having some IT problems. We had a round robin email from a shower called Opal Telecom about 10 days ago and it appears to have introduced a virus, the system has been unstable ever since. Our IT man has done all the checks and says it's not the hardware, the software supplier says it's him, and not them, but while they argue we have the blue screen of death and we had around 6 hours downtime today, multiplied by 5 users = a hell of a lot of work lost. Solution seems to be to buy a new server. Dell do one for about £1300 + VAT, so why is the software supplier quoting sharp end of three grand?

I don't understand enough about it so I find it very hard to tell who's right. And in the meantime I have clients complaining so I have to smooth ruffled feathers. But it's costing a bloody fortune...

Then the tidiness obsessive fell out with somebody else, I had a ****ty fax from some head up **** divorce lawyer down in London, I was so glad when the IT man came and said he'd have to switch everyone off so he could have a good look cos it meant go home and start on the pain relief.

bummer IT do seem to have their own thing going on sometimes. Took me 3 days to get a username where I've started, which meant I had no work. Must have been an important part of WoW on the go
Is it your own business?

(i do write that knowing how many of you guys work in IT - but you spend your time on the board- completely understandable)

Ed if you've got a virus in your system it should be easy to clear and get rid off, you dont need to buy a new server, you just need to get some decent anti-virus software and somebody who knows how to use it in.

However Blue Screen of deaths are'nt always easy to get rid of and to be honest it doesnt sound very virus like ( to me anyway ) to get one caused by a virus.

Sounds like to me you've got a hardware fault on your server thats causing the problem or failing that a driver problem. If its been trouble free up to this point and you've not changed anything then I'd wager hardware fault.

Oh and you're software supplier is probably adding on a fair margin for the server, but if you get my meaning a server can be many things. They come in different flavours and have different levels of power, performance and resiliency all of which cost so it might be the Dell one you are looking at is budget and the one he's quoted you for has some hardware resiliency built into it which is why it costs more.

Deep breath, fresh start tomorrow.

I love this one - I can just imagine you emptying the hole puncher on her desk and then running back to yours hiding your head in your useless blue screen with phone to your ear...sniggering like Dastardly.

Edit: In with anger--and breathe out with love!!
