Default New rider.....advice please

Ive bought a 99 (T) SV650s and couldn't have been happier. but on day one I was town riding in 2nd and managed to pull a power wheelie and finished up on a lampost. Luckily the damage is mostly cosmetic! I have since found out the bike has a BMC filter, Dynojet stage 3 and Micron serpent hydroflow system.....as a result the throttle is incredibly responsive....much more twitchy than the 500 I passed my direct access on.
I would like to de-sensitise the throttle a little to give me some margin for error.....Could i remove the air filter for a stock one without having to get it dyno'd....
Any advice much appreciated

Si

But I do have a simple and cost free solution for you ... I have a set of stock carbs, and airfilter I'd be happy to swap for your BMC setup as I am after some BMC stuff for my trackbike. You can probably get away with the exhaust system as the Micron one isn't that far off stock as these things go, IIRC. But happy to swap/trade in stock downpipes too

Basically unbolt your stuff, bolt mine on and you have a stock setup again!!! Where abouts are you located? I'd even do the swap over for you if you like - had this sort of stuff apart many times before, so a dab-hand even if I say so myself!!

I don't think you will notice much difference to your bike's power output if you take off the filter and jets.2-3 BHP?You need to practice being smooth with the throttle, something we all need to do riding any bike so we don't bin it in the wet.

Agreed, that wheelie sounds like the result of ham fisted throttle / clutch control.

Just try using smaller inputs to the throttle and being a bit more gentle with letting the clutch out i.e. slip it a bit more till you get used to the bike.

As those mods are performance enhancing you should either revert to stock or inform your broker ASAP as you will soon find your insurance is invalid!

perhaps i could recommend a Honda CG125:

as far as i can ascertain they hadn't invented throttle response before Honda designed it...

You wouldn't happen to know if you have a 5th turn throttle modification do you? With the mods you listed as already being done by the previous owner I wouldn't be surprised if that was on there too...This coupled with inexperience on the bike would certainly set you on your back wheel quicker than normal...If you get rid of these mods you will regret it some day...

If it has had the sprockets changed too ... say a 14t front and 48 rear or summin? Then it'd make it a bit lively!!

Welocome to the site.

I concur with BB and Fizzwheel. Work on your throttle control. That's asumming the bike has been kept in good condition. ie carb in Sync, TPS, chain adjusted ok. Check the other bits mentioned as well.

Interested in the MODs you have mentioned though. Any pics of the bike showing the exhaust system? Only asking a I'm not aware that Micro did a Serpent system for the SV.

Is the BMC filter the open topped one?

Thanks to all who have taken the time to reply......
Must point out that I have only been riding a few weeks and so inexperience probably played a large part.......
Dont know why people struggle to wheelie, I must just be a natural

Blue......Thanks for the offer...but I had planned to de-sensitise things until I got my confidence up and then putting all the mods back on....plus I live next to John'O Groats (north of scotland) U still fancy carry out the mods?!?
21QUEST....Dont know enough about the Dynojet stage 3 system to comment on the Micron serpent hydroflow system only the sellers say so...But I can confirm the BMC filter is the open topped one and I have the Dyno readings from BMC Bristol. With ref to your request for pics I have the before version (you dont wanna see the after, few nasty scuffs !)

Anyone recommend a decent company to match my 1999 (T) paintwork, gonna do it myself with an aerosol...
