A mate asked me along to go have a play with his new toys on the weekend. In the last couple of months he bought a Quad bike and then out of the blue a 250 2-stroke crosser. So we stuck the stuff on the trailer and took it to a localish place where plod turns a blind eye. The place was manic and we didn't much like the look of the crowd. We rather stuck out. So we packed up and left. Instead we went and played in a little paddock (with permission).
Anyway I'm rambling. I've not ridden a crosser in years and never a 2 stroke. It was interesting though not as much fun as I hoped. I was very aware that I didn't have the right kit on and that I don't really have any experiance. The 2-stroke thing was also interesting, nothing... not a lot... LOTS. There was a bit of short grass (track in\out of paddock) and towards the end having got a bit of confidence (and probably a bit cocky) I gave it a bit too much coming off this (and turning) and low sided. Doh. Nice grass stain on my jeans and later a headache which I still have. I also had a go on the quad. That was interesting and porbably more fun, though also scary. Thumb throttles, what are they all about? It felt incredably unstable (didn't ever actually tip) and it was a bit of a byatch to turn. Still interesting and again if I got some proper kit I'd love another go, though probably where there's a bit more space. |

I had a 250 2 stroke KTM when i was 16. It went like the clappers. Four strokes seem very tame in comparison (of course they arent really). However I now really want an RS250 aprilia project for the winter...

2 Strokes are much better off road bikes IMO they deliver power with a Sledgehammer (Especially CR500s) don't weigh anything and smell great.

I think it might depend on what type or riding you do or the style or rider you are.
I've not heard of anyone that could actually ride a CR500 properly. Though I've heard many a time that it'll lift the front wheel anywhere in any gear ![]() |
