right. been using autoCAD 2004lt for years, but only today did i need to recover an automaticlly saved backup which autoCAD does by itself. (autoCAD crashed and lost a whole mornings work!) so, i thought i would find the file in the temp folder....found, but saved as a .sv$ file. (autocad's string file). I know you have to convert it to a .dwg file, as browsing the net, it said "simply right hand click and rename to drawingname.dwg". ok seems simple...do that and nothing, doesnt change, still doesnt open. speak to one of the guys at work and says you ahve to go through msdos and change the file name that way. so off i go change the name and voila, changed to .dwg and managed to open up what i lost!. But surely there must be an easier way to recover this file ratehr than going through dos??!!!!

Was the file locked.. i.e autocad running while you tried to change name?
Maybe you could try making a copy of the backup, then renaming that |

nope. not running. and i also moved the file into a folder on its own, as i found some info saying it might not change it if there is allready a file named the same. still nothing.
the newer versions of autoCAD come with a manager which converts it for you. but sure even with the older versions there must be an easier way to convert it back to .dwg files without having to go through MSDOS! its rediculous! |
