Question Oil Level

Is the designated oil level (between the hi and low lines on the sump) supposed to be determined with the engine running or stopped? And if stopped are you supposed to wait a while to let all that oil drip off the gears?

You're supposed to take it for a smooth run then leave it for 5 mins and look.

Buy a Haynes its in there

Engine stopped, bike on a level surface and not on the side stand.. I think the correct procedure is to run the bike for 3 minutes and then leave and then check the level, but like Kwak I check mine with a cold engine...

There will be a difference hot and cold, but I am only looking for ballpark ... I never let the level (knowingly) drop below half way anyway, so it is not like I need exact measure ... its a waste of petrol to go for a run just to check the oil

I do sometimes check after a ride (like when i get to work) but 9 times out of 10 it is done cold ...
