Default VW diese engine oil advice

Dad has got a Skoda Octavia (which has a Passat engine) and he's not sure which engine oil to use. From what I can gather the engine was originally on the variable service interval thing (which I don't really understand) but at the last service the Skoda dealer reverted it to the set service intervals by putting different oil in (or something like that).

After all that, what oil should he be using?

Ive got the same problem with my passat, all its life its had VW longlife oil in and service intervals were at every 20k but when i purchased the car the garage i got it off put normal mineral oil in, i have only done 2k in the car since buying it and the service interval reading is already saying 1600 miles to the next service? when it needs doing in 1600 miles i'll have to just take it to VW.
