Hi Fellow Sv'ers
I had to remove and change the front cylinder head (ta hooligan) due to a rust-welded spark plug (damn the previous owner , just serviced when I bought it my arris ![]() Theres a couple of questions I need to ask as I dont have a service or haynes manual . Could anyone please tell me the torque setting for the 4 cylinder head bolts (the long ones) . I also dropped a testicle by not marking the cams/timing chain in my haste with tippex before I removed the cams (been a while since i played with engines , and dawned on me just after the point of no return ) , I have set the piston to TDC and got loads of marks on the cam , could you tell me (or a pic would be ideal) how the marks align up on them at TDC. Thanks In Advance Hopefully Soon ETA , just had a thought , if i was to remove the rocker cover on the rear cylinder , that would be at BDC , so would the timing marks on the cams be reversed for the front ? just read the manual and easy for easy ref .
The cylinder head bolts are Initial - 25 n.m , 2.5 kgf.m and 18.0 lb.ft , and Final - 42 n.m , 4.2 kgf.m and 30.5 lb/ft . Hopefully Soon |

did you figure cams?
remember front cams should be set one crank revolution away from where rears are set. it has nothing to do with rear piston BDC. |

Being a 90 degree V-twin the front and rear piston are not in the sort of sync that means BDC on one is TDC on the other, Do it properly using the manual. If in doubt, check again. Cutting corners at this point in the game is potentially rather expensive.
There should be timing marks on the Left hand side using the inspection bolt removed from the top of the left crank case. This has markers for TDC on P1 and TDC on P2. The Cams should be marked up too. Best of luck ![]()

And remember when you're done DONT just hit the starter, get the cap off the side of the crankcase and a 17mm socket on the crank and turn the engine by hand 4 or 5 times to check that nothings badly out and hitting pistons.

Oh and check the cam chain tensioner is moving smoothly, and set any slack to the "back" of the cylinder so the cam chain tensioner can take it out as you start turning the motor by hand and the timing stays as you expected.
