Well went out yesterday with Tony the observer guy.

Not for the full 8 hours as he was suffering with a bad cold and wasn't up to watching us and following safely.

Any hoo, started off with a couple of hours chitchat at our place. Hardly any teach talk more general bike discussion. Very relaxed.

So we set off and I had to have one of them talkie things in my ear. Soon got used to it though.

Went out on a variety of roads and had a couple of de-briefs. No faults apparently but my life-savers needed improving and got told off for not offsiding enough and for not nearsiding close enough to the curb. A few other pointers about my position on the road under various different circumstances and that was the end of the session. About 70 miles covered and plenty for me to think and act on.

Money well spent so far and another session to come.

Not offsiding enough!? I still hate that..... I would get 0% for offsiding, I just don't do it.

Nahh it's using wrong side of the road to improve visibility in, or rather, before left handers.

I don't tend to do it either, certainly not to improve my visibility anyway, it seems like putting yourself in the firing line to see if a gun is about to fire.
If I can't see I'd rather slow down a little and stay on the proper side of the road. The only time I'd use the wrong side of the road is if I know for absolute certain that there's nothing coming the other way.

Ahh yea... Doh, me being slow.

No I dont often do it. Infact I cant remember the last time I have. Just wait and do it on a decent opportunity, we can we are on bikes ffs.

Which is why you get out there early, when the road is clear. If you do it 20 yards before the corner that's just plain stupid. It does improve visibility, and may just show you that broken down tractor you wouldn't see in your own lane.

The guy is an advanced instrutor telling us this. You'd think he may have some idea what he's talking about.

observed pete doin this on the north south and had a good discussion about it at a stop.. stew (addicted) does it too .. it looks scary from behind but thats because they are out there early and me was still on my side 10 yards from my drop in point so I am judging their position with my viewpoint....

bottom line is- Pete is a crackin rider and still here to tell the tale.. it works if done safely and controlled and Lissa backs it up and she is sat at the back with complete trust in her "darlin"..

so is worth lookin in to but I would suggest its not worth gettin yer bike out tommorow and hoonin around on the opposite side of the road at every corner.. go on a ride out- see osme one do it- observe and chat and try it on a route you know.. very well.!! with wide open corners..

it scares the living sh!te out of me to do it.. but love watching better riders than me do it..

Off-siding, the key is use it to maintain a view down the road, not to GAIN a view down the road. In other words like Lissa said, get out early when you can see nothing is coming to maintain your view forward, if you lose that view, move back onto your side. There was a huge thread on this while back....
