Internal bore of steerer tube measures 17.1mm. Top nut thread on my 2006 SV650s is M24 x 1.5, less than £5 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3612204195...84.m1436.l2649 These are £40+on ultimate mobiles but with 10% discount on orders over £30 it's only just over £30 posted: http://www.ebay.co.uk/myb/PurchaseHi...84.m2034.l3391

I initially went wih a metal stem mount similar to that shown in your link and found it buckled as I did it up way before it was tight enough in the stem bore. It was made to cover a range of hole sizes and the SV was at the upper end of the range. No good so I sent it back. I then tried the RAM mount stem plug which has worked fine. Follow the instructions very carefully as it is easy to cut the rubber in the wrong place or use the wrong plastic end nut. Even when assembled correctly the mount can be rotated by hand which has not been a problem in use.
To fit any stem hole mount, obviously the solid yolk top nut has to be changed. I went with an alloy star shaped job which claims to be tougher than the OEM nut and has been fine. I had other schemes such as drilling the centre of the nut and fixing a RAM mount through the resulting hole or using a RAM clamp on the nearside of the steering/ignition lock( there is a pic on the forum of this solution which looks neat) but went with the rubbery RAM stem mount and it has been fine. Have fun finding a solution Last edited by Fen Tiger; 15-10-15 at 04:49 PM. Reason: . |

Interesting you've mentioned that it won't tighten due to working at maximum diameter, I queried this with the seller and they assured me it would be ok, but they would of course! I'll probably wrap it in bicycle inner tube before hand.

Yes, good idea Alex. A sleeve which fills the gap between the mount and the stem bore as much as possible should work. For the benefit of others, that mount is formed of a thin wall tube cut at an angle. As you tighten it up the lower part of the tube is pulled up and to one side. The head of the mount is pushed off centre and the force between the two parts of tube gets concentrated at two small opposing areas of the tube wall causing it to distort and dig in without tightening against the bore enough. My thoughts were that it would have worked had the bore been close to the diameter of the tube. If the mount had been designed more like a bicycle handlebar stem mount with a solid wedge even better. By then mine was buckled so I couldn't experiment further. Hopefully you can get it to work with a flexible sleeve. Anything to keep the movement of the two parts within the small size of the tube wall thickness is worth a try. Would be interesting to know how you get on.

I use a magnetic phone case and attach it to the tank.
When I need to look at it to see where to turn I just pick it up with my left hand, look at it then put it back down. Thinking about it, its not too safe as Im taking a hand off the handlebars but works for me. |

Doghammer it really depends how busy the roads are near you, good luck!
My mount arrived today. I am impressed with the setup. Not so impressed the bolt wouldn't go through the wedge. It wouldn't have tightened on any diameter, perhaps this was the problem with yours Mr Fen? One M8 tap later, bolt passes through and the mount tightened successfully without any packing. |
