Jp whatever you do don't join the RAF!! i've been in 6 years now and it's getting worse! less people and more commitments that mixed with poo accomodation and pay makes it a miserable place to be, unless your like a mushroom-live in the dark and fed on sh*t in which case you'll love it

11.5 yr brillcream boy. I am sooo happy at getting out, but I have enjoyed myself and I am proud of doing what I have done, esp since I check into hotels, pongos' dig in and fishheads hunt for that golden rivet

+1.

Im on my way out... Over 14 days im working 11. All 11 days are 12 hour shifts. I don't get ANY over time. NOTHING! So that means with what I earn im on £4.70 an hour before tax and cost of living... if you take that into account then im on about £3.20.

Im not even going to mention the other forces... its even worse in some cases.

Just what I was thinking. The Greek - comparing military salary with hourly rate is a poor example of comparisons IMO as the military are paid 24hrs around the clock...in other words, the military are paid even when they are not working. In addition, the military is one of the few organisations that do not subscribe (as it were) to the 'minimum wage' legislation. They have their own pay review body which sitts annually, and, overall, military salary is actually quite good when compared with that of the civilian counterparts.

I would agree with high pay band and Cpl+ pay being ok... I get about £45 a day so me working it out to an hourly rate works fine i think.

I think the way the military is payd is down right wrong! Hence me leaving. Also I think until they sort things like this the Forces will struggle with recruiting. Ive told them as much when the drafters ask.

Doesnt sound like Air force I was in, saying that, we still had Germany and Hong kong to be posted too, we never had enough money either, always skint by the 3rd week of the month, but had the best 10 yrs of my life really, saw loads, did loads and miss it even today, but....civvy st's not that great either, you,ll miss the camaraderie of your mates being around you and 1000 other things as well, good luck to you though.
