I was a forces kid, Dad was 3RTR, based in Germany for most of my childhood.

Dad used to take me to work with him so I could play with great big trucks, this was where I developed my love of the Alvis Stalwart, the Scorpion Tank and Land Rover.

Dad was a little disappointed when aged eleven I asked if I could join CND, although being a good old stick he was always lovely. Being an army kid was cool, our scout troop went rifle shooting in the range. When I came back to the UK and found another scout troop, they went to church!

Got kicked out of the scouts in the end for claiming to be an atheist republican. I refused to swear allegiance to God and the queen...

Leaving army schools and going to a civvi school in Plymouth was rather odd. It was chaotic and I had huge gaps in my knowledge, due to attending thirteen different schools by the time I was sixteen. Also the other kids said I had a posh accent and refused to talk to me. I became a punk loving metalhead and got my face pierced, great fun.

Dad still talks with fondness for his army days, he got to sit for hours talking with his mates, drinking tea and occasionally went camping in his truck for a few weeks in the summer. : smt015

Aye all the good postings are gone... its all about the middle east. The numbers are down so much its changed all together. Its nothing like it was, its all about going away to afgan/iraq for 4/6 months often. Not great imo.

Guess some people enjoy it... but its not for me

Aye... it wouldnt be tooo bad but im on lower pay band (basically the RAF wanting to save money). The Cpl's+ are on higher. The main issue is it will take 10 years minimum to get to Corporal due to over population of the trade at Cpl+ level as they have merged trades. 10 years as an SAC. Erm no thank you.

Currently in her majesty's Royal Air Farce and have been for over 17 years.

Have to say that the pay is sh*te if you are not on the higher pay band. Also what's with the retention bonus for RAF Reg and pilots?

Pilots to get 50,000 bonus if they promise to stay in for 5 years then another 50,000 at the end! Mortgage free in 10 years then.
