I may well discover it's too much hassle for the saving and resort to taking it to my normal tyre garage (which is only 5 minutes walk away and run by a biker) in future. I'd like to try though as at the very least, I'd like to be able to do it in an emergency, when the garage is shut/busy etc.

Also, anyone know what size valve the SV (K4) takes as my Haynes is at the other end of the country.

TIA.
Buy right angled ones instead, like the ones Triumphs have as standard. Much easier to use and you won't need to replace them for a very long time. I'm having them fitted to my SV and CBR next time they get new tyres

Exactly my thoughts, though I may be tempted to buy a cheap tyre changing machine if I can find one for sale. Should be a few on the market soon as smaller bike shops start to close down in the current economic climate.

Ah yes, I've seen those on some bikes. Any ideas on where to order them?
Also, what size the K4 takes?

Try these guys:

I buy all my tyres and related products from them. They'll be fitting some of these to my wheels next time I'm there

Ta for that Lozzo, they are the same people I was ordering the tyre weights from, so free P&P.

Yeah, I just do mine in the swingarm/forks with the axle slackened. Works well, but it takes longer- you basically just do more spins as the individual spins have a wider margin of error.

I bought the stuff from them last week. Slight complication (due to ****-witedness on my part) and they were very good about it. Very swift turnaround, great communication and very reasonable prices. I'll be going to them for all my tyre stuff in future.
