Someone needs to explain this big bang thing to me like I'm a five year old. I'm guessing the cylinders don't fire with equal time in between them?

New R1 is (apparently) 180°/270°/180°/90°

VFR750 is 180°/270°/180°/90° So the same...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnk7M...eature=related IL4 vs Big bang/VFR V4, which sound better

New R1, you can hear it a bit... but there isnt a decent sound bite there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gj8pw...cyclenews.com/

Does that above not make sense? Basically every half a turn of the crank in a screamer (a standard IL4) a piston fires.

A 90° V2 is Bang (1st cylinder at 0°) then 1 full and 1 Quarter turn for 2nd cylinder Bang (450°) then 3 Quarters of a turn (270°) to return to first cylinder.

A IL3 Hard to describe in amount of turn in words... Basically 240° between the firing.

With the big bang it isnt every half of a turn per fire, it varies. So for the new R1 its:-

Half a turn bang (180°),
3 quarters of a turn bang (270°),
Half a turn Bang (180°),
1 Quarter of a turn Bang (90°).

Then it starts again. Make better sense?

NOTE: It takes 720° (2 full turns) for the cycle to be complete... this is because its a 4 stroke.

Yeah thanks. I'm afraid I don't know my camshaft from my crank.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=famZ0x1Ce-0 (shows all the main bits of an engine).

This shows a standard IL4 setup, notice that 2 pistons go up and down together but as they get to the top they take it in turns to fire (only one per rotation...)

This shows the new R1 engine. You will notice a difference in how the crank looks!

this is a V4 (same as in a VFR 750-800)

I reckon it's because in classical Japanese art, someone being depicted as crosseyed denotes intense concentration. It's often used in the context of martial prowess; Samurais, Generals looking over a battlefield, etc.

the all new fangled jap bikes look...wrong. new fireblade; shamshed on the nose with a shovel. new r1...fairings shrunk in the wash and exhausts blown up a bit like a balloon. zx10r...maggots for front indicators...

GSXR looks pretty normal now

Anyway, I want a new R1. not because its new, because it dares to try something differant. For me, its the biggest change in bikes since the 1992 'blade (that introduced the idea of a big engine in a tiny, good handling chassis...now we have good chassis, and engines which have been pretty much the same....now we get a new type of engine, ok, its still inline 4, but its not a "screamer")

Till the next one. Dont matter anyway the Japs will never make a bike better looking than the K5-6 Gixxer 1000.

You are getting them confused the 600/750 have different styling to the 1000 as they are on different cycles. http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bi...nt/?&R=EPI-439 is the K5/6 1000.

Even though the difference is small in the flesh the 1000 is MUCH nicer than the smaller brothers. Just a shame its OTT with the power and an IL4.

What's OTT with the power when it's at home? Are you actually suggesting some amount of power is too much? :-O
