Ok will do that. Testing the yellow wires, is that just a matter of sticking the probes from the multimeter into the connector from the alternator? What setting on meter should i use?

Yes into that connector, there are 3 pins, call them 1 2 and 3, does not matter which is which... put probe from 1-2 then 2-3 then 3-1... those are your 3 phases, they should all have 70V or so and be similar when revved. If any drop to zero when revved or have no voltage at all then stator is fried.

Use volts AC setting

Right all connectors cleaned and checked and test done are as follows;
Ammeter test 0.0 to 0.1 so no current leak
Ohms resistance test on yellow wires from alternator
Pins (1-2) 0.9 (2-3) 0.9 (1-3) 0.9
AC load test on yellow wires from alternator
Pins (1-2) 70-80+ (2-3) 70-80+ (1-3) 70-80+ at 3000 to 5000rpm
Battery ignition off 12.8
Battery idle 13.11
Battery rev 13.30 rising to 13.99

All done on cheap 6 quid multimeter incase that makes a differance

So does this sound healthier? Battery maybe about 4 years old but i have new yuasa on its way and want to be sure charging system is normalish before i put on new battery.

Stupid question but wheres the earth on a naked curvy?

Yeah that lot looks adequate though I'd be happier seeing a consistent 14+. Did you try it with lights on too?

Yeah did test with lights on but not much difference with ignition on and not running or at idle. infact it raised ok at idle with lights on but still dropping slightly at 3000-5000rpm?
I will test it all again when my new battery turns up. Where about is the earth connection so i can give that a clean up too, the frame or elsewhere?

Back of motor, get to it from right hand side, just to rear of clutch cover.

Some voltage drop is normal on those reg-recs, so long as it does not go below 13.5V when revving it is ok

New battery on and.... its made no difference still dropping voltage at 5000rpm got as low as 12.5v so put old battery back on and it was even worse, fine on all others so time for a new reg/rec then *off to start saving again*

Looks like you were right yc way back on post #8
