On the punted up the ass padded debate.
I use the Endura Hummvee 3/4 with clickfast padded lycra inner liner shorts in winter or riding with friends. In the summer amongst strangers or alone I've been on 55km rides wearing just these cool tight MT500 shorts. edit: and a XC top, etc.  and my saddle is tiny

I still use Lycra on the trail...
Yes it feels nice but it's more about being comfortable and not getting baggies caught on the saddle and trees etc. |
