I blame Motion Control! The lockout was really obvious on my Toras and Suntours, but since the revelations keep a tiny bit of travel even at the hardest lockout setting, they still feel quite nice on small bumps.

I've nearly got my old rigid rebuilt now, need to refinish the frame first (it's going to be left in the raw steel but clearcoated) but most of the parts are refurbished or replaced now so it's almost good to go. It's to be a commuter really, but I've kept the gearing low enough that it'll do offroading too if I choose, I want to try it on the reds See if I die.

First time out on one in ohhhh 5 years. Just a bit of road stuff but I appear to have found the way to convert a mostly functional human body into an oily ball of sweat held together by a T shirt.

The stepdads bike is a liability. Brakes that just don't and a back wheel the shape of a poppadom!

Did a 28km route round the Winchester area today, 90% off-road off course. Was a bit stiff to start with as I haven't been out since December, but all in all was a good bit of exercise...which was then undone by going to the pub!

We doing the 40k night ride and then popping up to Llandegla on the sunday for a ride.

This might sound daft, but how do you tighten up the headstock? Im getting a bit of play through it and its very noticeable.

Loosen the stem first, then adjust the head bearings with the M6 bolt in the top of the steerer (assuming you have a modern A-head stem etc)

Rob, taken from www.parktool.com/repair
  1. To adjust bearings, LOOSEN STEM BOLT(S).
  2. Turn adjusting bolt in center cap only 1/8th turn clockwise.
  3. Secure stem bolts, check for play again.
  4. Repeat adjustments as above until play disappears. Remember to loosen stem bolts before turning adjusting bolt in cap.
  5. Check alignment of stem and tighten stem binder bolts fully

Thanks for that Gents, will give it a go. You know the smallest amount of playing is highly annoying!

Just noticed this thread - me getting a MTB later this week, decided I need to get fit!

Girth will be getting a visit from me at work, where I will doubtless be asking loads of noob questions and becoming the laughing stock of the water cooler talk afterwards!

Anyone care to suggest some nice fire trail / muddy puddle tyres for my bike? Not to bothered about on road capabilty, but the standard ones on my rockhopper don't inspire confidence on loose stuff....

plus I really need to get out more, I'm painfully slow
