Ah right, haven't really heard of droppy seat posts but I get why one would be useful.

Yep some new apparel will be required, though I have a lot of outdoorsy stuff which should be fine. Shoes are definitely needed though so will have a look just now. Gonna have a look at better forks as the consensus from googling seems to be that they are the main weak point of the bike. Having said that I will give it a good go with the ones on there before spending cash as the ability of the forks are probably beyond my abilities right now... Oh and they have a remote lockout which is new to me and I like a lot!

Cant wait til next set of days off work to get a decent run on it. Need to find out where decent trails are nearby, but for now Pollok park trails will do!

I picked up a MTB today-A Carrera Vulcan (review here http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/catego...lcan-12-45673/ ). It appears to be good value for money & a good starting bike to get fit on and find some trails.

Hey guys, I've never really given this thread much look in but I wanted some advice on a new bike. I currently have an old steel framed twin disc hardtail. It's quite a weighty beast but can I lighten it or should I buy new? Quite like the carera vulcan posted but have seen a lot of complaints about weight.

I looked around a lot before getting it. To me it doesn't appear to be hugely over weight compared to other bikes for the money and spec.
I'll be riding it tomorrow & the weekend so will be able to say how heavy it feels on the move.

Buy new, you'll not be able to make it much lighter

Think I need to weigh it but I think it's steel framed.

Steel framed bikes aren't incredibly light, and the cheap ones are like riding scaffolding poles. I built up a steel MTB in 2012. I spent around £2k on it. It's got XT groupset, Hope wheels and disc brakes and Thompson finishing kit. It a good spec bike but still comes in at 28lbs in weight. It's a great ride though. By comparison I have a Cannondale F800 Lefty. This is an aluminium race bike and this has reasonable kit on it, but not as good as the steel bike. This comes in at 22lbs.

Well I have just weighed my bike and it is a hefty 15.5kg. So anything else will be a huge improvement!
