Carrera are actually very good for the price. Highly specced, you would do worse than get one of those if you dont want to go 2nd hand.

I reckon a Specialized Hardrock or Maybe a GT Avalanche may be in your price range, particularly if you can find an 07 or 08 bike.

Nice harvester! Another of your projects?

Take the wheel reflectors off! They add at least 5 kilos and take 5mph off your top speed, honest.

Oh, on a more serious note, just for a wee bit of extra protection make sure you keep the fork stanchions clean- Suntour's seals don't actually seal very much, so mud can get stuck into them and into the plastic bushings under them and it soon wears and gets sloppy. A quick wipe down after a ride, then a wipe with a cloth and a bit of fork oil, then bounce the forks to "wipe" the seals and that should keep it ticking over for much longer. (you'll see after you bounce it, it'll come back up with a mud "ring" if the seals have been clogging) Motorbike fork oil is fine and about 1/3d the price of mtb fork oil They're good forks for the money, way better than the orrible Dart 1s you see on some bikes, but they need a wee bit more tlc than some.

Good choice tho, should do you proud. It's the SV of mountain bikes!

Nice pics plowsie - I thought that was a tank for a minute in the last pic, had to do a double take!

Hey Northy - me & some mates just booked a weekend in Glencoe at the beginning of September, we're planning on bringing the mountain bikes up and riding some proper trails, can't wait!
