Modern forks will do weird things to your head angle, frames back then were designed to take a max of about two inches of travel, most forks these days have between three and five inches. The other issue you may have is routing brake lines. If you are running cantilever brakes that have a straddle wire, you will struggle to find a fork with the required mounting. You could upgrade your brakes to V-Brakes, but if you have STI levers, you will need new gear levers too.

Sorry if this seems negative, what are others views here?

Well yes, £1000 is actually a lot to spend on a MTB. I meant it's not a lot compared to the top end carbon fibre race model I linked to which is ridiculous money, could get a brand new supersports 600 for £7500, no carbon fibre as standard tho.

Could be cheaper and more likely to be a whole lot easier to buy a 2nd hand bike with forks. Cheap forks are worse than a rigid front as they don't do much and add weight.

You might get accustomed to the rigid front after a few more rides. Might even be worth trying some gloves to dampen out any vibrations.

think I'll be looking at spending around £250 on my first mtb (but I am the most skint I've ever been so it may have to wait a little while)...

Sorry folks, don't know where else to put this. As I may have mentioned I work in a bike shop. Today I had to deal with a who made me want to and . OK, I may not work for the best bike shop in the UK, but I am fairly and I know my stuff.

Said and his wife and at me because I could not them by building a bike for them on the spot and have it ready for their daughters birthday tomorrow. Like it was my fault they forgot.

Anyway, I them to and, because I am not paid enough to deal with a .

Later on when Carol arrived to pick me up I was but she soon made me feel .

Anyway, the moral if the story is this:

because it leads to instead of .

yep..understand it is their problem not yours no matter how much they jump up and down and shout about it. Move on and help other people who need and appreciate what you do . All this bike talk and I feel like dusting down my bike and heading to the hills.

I dislike having to deal with rude people, they should just be nice instead. Also you are probably a cool dude, where as I am a geek in a bike shop!

Despite all of the years I hung out with the Angels, got covered in tattoos and had every extremity pierced, I am actually a delicate little flower! *

Please don't take it the wrong way but your post just made me chuckle Jayne...

And Ta for the info on the forks. I shall try pookies suggestion and invest in a good saddle and stick it out for a bit. The thing is, I must have done well over 1000miles on the bike when I first got it. So I could just get used to it again.
