This is what most people who commute on mtb's seem to do. Damn site cheaper than buying new wheels and hubs etc. Just a bit more of a pain if you wish to swap between the two.

H'mm not sure if keeping the gearing the same is a good idea, as most MTB's have 46t front chain rings and a big spread of gears at the back up to 32t. You need this when riding off road, but not on the road.

When racing its better to have smaller gaps between the gears

Ive got slicks on a pair of spare wheels and I use a road bike gear cassette on the back wheel for road use. I find that even in my relatively unfit state, I'm nearly in the biggest gear, so I could do with 2 extra teeth on the front chainring.

On my proper road bike I have a 53 & 39t front chainring & 12 - 23t 10speed cassette on the rear, which is fine for the flat roads round where I live

So....fellow cyclers....quick question. I am unfit as hell, but have so far cycled 40 miles this week. Once home it will be 48 miles in three days. For me that is quite a feat.

However, my legs are currently like jelly and killing me......I am going to try the cold water bath treatment tonight....however, is it worth me having a rest day tommorow and getting the train, or should I just pough on and man up?!?!?

Good to have a rest day, especially as you're not used to this.

Its a good idea to have something high in protein to eat as soon as you finish your ride. It helps repair damage to muscles, which is why they're hurting.Cold bath will also help, but your muscles are looking for food/energy.

It will ease, but this is the hardest bit

Man up yer big poof - or ask yourself, WWFD*

Are you twiddling or plunging?

Keeping a higher cadence (twiddling) will be better for you in terms of building up your cardio strength, using a higher/harder gear (plunging) is good for strength work but will take more out of your leg muscles.

For tomorrow, focus on keeping your pedals 'going round in smooth circles', rather than 'up and down'

Make sure you keep your fluids up, and try stretching you legs out once you get home.

Oh, and have a shower, cos you stink

Cheers for the advice mr Matt.

Currently doing a mixture of both - twiddling up hills.... plunging on flats and down hill. The problem I think is that I have literally done no physical work in about a year and its simply a shock to the system!!! I know it will take time to get easier.

This explains the difference quite well, assuming he's factually correct...

Put it this way, you're a V-twin, low revs and high torque, you want to be a triple, with a bit of IL4 up the hills

That should clear it up

BTW, what are you and Lily up to this autumn? I'm resigning from my current job on the 3rd September and will have some free time, dunno if you guys fancy a wales weekend cycling (if you're off-roading?) - much better than riding on the road...
