Phew, only just read this Fizz, glad you're ok.

Yep front wheel is buggered, but I bet you could have a new one built up on a new rim.

Reminds me of an old accident I had as a youff. Cycling home after my paper round I rode into the back of a stationary car, my fault, but no damage to me or my bike, or so I thought?

A few years later I was cycling along on this bike without lights and a police car shouted at me, so in a panic I applied the brakes and made a bid for an alternative route, only to find myself instantly on the deck?

Puzzled, but unhurt I carried on home. A few months later a I was cycling home and had to brake sharply, again I instantly found myself on the deck. After close inspection of the bike, I found a crease in the downtube close to the headtube, if I braked hard, the tubes flexed enough for the front wheel to make contact with the downtube, and instant brick wall effect.

Then there was the incident of the tennis racket in the front wheel...............

So junk the frame, but save the components, either build up another winter hack or sell them to some fool like me on Ebay

Always wear yer feckin helmet

Yep I'm thinking new bike time. I had been looking at a new bike anyway, so every cloud has a silver lining and that.

Going to take the bike to the LBS and see what they say. I'll need something official to send to the insurance company so I can make a claim for the damage.

So might as well get all that done at the same time.

I've got my bike home.

Front wheel is smashed the rim is split and every spoke is bent or broken, theres even paint scuffs on some of the spokes off the front bumper, which means I think he's pretty much driven into me. Rims bent double like a banana like its been folded over.

Forks are bent, Steering is out of allignment and where the downtube meets the steerer tube on the frame, the welds a funny shape and the top tube isnt straight anymore.

So Its dead.

Feel a bit down about it all tonight, think bringing the bike home brings it all home as to whats happened.

Well at least you're not dead or tucked up in a hospital bed with legs or arms in plaster.

As we always say, bikes can be repaired or replaced, you can't.

I can see where you're coming from, but its not worth dewelling on

Just look forward to what you can get to replace it and you're not going to have to shell out for it.

No trying not to dwell on it.

Jus stripped all the stuff of it thats personal, such as my garmin and bottle cages and stuff like that. Then going to take pictures of it tomorrow once Liz is back with my DSLR so I have evidence of the damage and then take it to the LBS to get a final verdict and price up the replacement.

I'm not going to buy like for like. I'm going to ugprade to the look that I wanted. So need to talk to his insurance company about where I go from here.

Been reading up a bit about groupsets. I'm not really a Campag man always run Shimano and always been happy with it.

I've always stuck with 105 and its served me well. Is the technical difference between 105 / Ultegra and Dura Ace really as much as the price difference suggests.

You can't really go wrong with 105, but the difference is in bits you can't see.

Dura Ace has mini bearings where you can't see them or special coatings etc

I've had a couple of DurAce components and they were jewel like compared to the 105/Ultegra and in my experience they work better for longer, because of the better build quality, and the function is just that bit better.

I've got Ultegra SL on my Wilier and its very good, but as a traditionalist I would prefer Campag, but the SL was £449 from Merlin, the Campag Chorus was £749. No contest really.

Long term Campag will probably last longer, even Athena was better quality than Ultegra at the time, but the gap is smaller now I think.

I wouldn't buy anything higher than Ultegra or Chorus in the range now, they're plenty good enough.

I would like to try a SRAM groupset, just to see
