Funny we should be talking about pedals and foot grip... I have decided I need better pedals after my feet slipping off a little too much today! ATM they only have rounded metal domes as studs, I've noticed these and these and they seem like they should do a much better job of holding onto me with those grub screws But which ones?

Oh

What you think then? Mostly FR Downhill stuff (though I do try to pedal up the hills too).

These are good...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wellgo-MG1-Mag...77ee07ff97216d

Very light, good price, loads of grip... But still tough enough, and pretty reliable. I've been using my titanium axled set for about 6 months and a steel axled set for about a year, no bother from either despite stomping them off rocks etc. The ti ones weigh nothing but they still stood up fine to daft downhill use at fort william innerleithen and france (though I'm not heavy, I don't exactly strain the axles!) Some wellgos are pretty cheap and nasty but others are really good- they make pedals for everything from Halfords shopping bikes to DMR's V12 ti-mags.

These are another, got a set of these just lately for the Hemlock and they're ace- heavier, but really thin so you bash them less and your feet feel more planted on them being closer to the axle. Though if you're wearing big Five Ten clown shoes I doubt that makes any difference with their platform soles

You can get superlight versions but they cost a packet.

I think one of this month's mountain bike mag's has a pedal test which I browsed and ignored at the newsagents.

I went for DMR V8s with a grease port, they look massive compared to my XC SPDs. The V12s are fully serviceable and all the pins are replaceable

I have had 2 sets of Wellgo pedals and both sets literally destructed within 8 months , admittedly they did live a very hard life . The right hand side on my first set actually seized on the axle so the pedal was fixed meaning that with every rotation of the crank I had to lift my right foot off the pedal as it was like pressing on a knife edge . The final set came right off the axle .... at least I could pedal that home , albeit with a very sore foot . I went for the Crank Brothers 50/50xx in Black and Gold . The idea with them was that they are fully serviceable and you can replace the plates and bearings on them and they have a grease port .... I have had them for 4 years or so now and only greased them about 6 months ago , the needle rollers are still ok but may need replacing . They also have more stubs in them as standard AND you can also fit extra grub screws as I have done . The plus point of these grub screws is that they screw in from underneath , so if you ding one you can screw it out still without damaging anything . These pedals have been on my Orange Patriot , an On-One 456 Summer Season and are now on my Cotic Hemlock

Hmmm, the wellgo that I have on from the factory are pants in that the grippy sticky out bits are just part of the mold and are rounded so offer no grip at all... Saying that they have had a few fair hits on them and they still spin nice though they are only like 4 months old now.

Bought the Magnesium pedals... See how they last, at £30 it dont matter tooooo much if they dont.

Well went for another ride on the new steed today and got on much better with the Crank Bros pedals. Did a particularly steep technical downhill without falling off despite needing to dab a few times. These pedals will be right.

The tyres are still rubbish and it is the fear of these letting go that held me back, I'll be visiting my favourite online retailer very soon. A few photos of today's little jaunt from my front door.

The light deteriorated so no photos from the best vantage point just before the gnarr downhill.

I've just been out for a spin on my, er, new bike... Almost finished rebuilding the rigid mtb I got when I was 12 By god it sucks But still, I love it. Needs one or two minor parts then it's to be my commuting bike, my brother's inconsiderately taking his back, but I fancy getting it muddy first... But aargh, v-brakes!

I think I bolted more box-fresh parts to it than I ever have making a new bike. But at the same time, the whole budget for the thing is less than the cost of the seatposts on my other bikes

Luckypants, I was out on saturday for a ride when I was climbing up I saw a guy with a trek (same frame as yours) pushing his bike down, stopped to see if all was well and nope, his derailer mount had snapped while climbing... he claimed without hitting anything! So just thought id say, it might be worth getting one bought as spare to carry with you.

Oh N' nice lookin ride out!
