I picked up a very clean 2001 DRZ400e for £1400 2 years ago. It had done about 3000/4000 miles. So IMHO you can get one for cheeper than that. But they are great bikes for greenlaning, and if you get a second set of wheels, you can swap from off road nobblies to SM monster in about 30minutes with practice. So lots of choice for fun!

Sorry too late I think, but I dont think that was too bad a price for condition and miles, they do keep their price around the 2k mark. Hmmm...its is 5 years old I suppose. Tricky.

Anyway, I dont know much at all about DRZs but someone told me not to go for the SM if you are thinking about trail riding and getting a second set of wheels as the suspension and gearing is different. Now that could be ******** but do check if you are considering that route.

Oh, and an SM will be of course thrashed...in a good way

I am just settling in with my Beta whch has the KTM 400 RFS engine in it. I wouldnt want to do many road miles on it at all, and you are looking at an iol and filter change (albeit cheap) every long weekend or so with unthrashed use.

the suspension is just as capable of doing it off road, the gearing is taller on the SM to give better cruising but you still hit 4th at around 40mph unless you're caning it. plenty of people get a second set of wheels for dirt on their SMs

taking an S onto the road you would want to change the front brake, the larger SM brake isn't the best anyway, the smaller S rotor wouldn't stop you well on blacktop at all, although it is more out of the way when you're off road...

I recently did an off road day and am looking at getting into it. I hear the Yam WR250 isa better bike as it's much lighter and just as much oomph?

I know Honda's equivalent is probably the XR400 (kickstart) however did Yamaha or Kawasaki ever do anything similarly engine sized with the same kind of service intervals?

I did one last year with Yamaha - I liked the WR250 much better than the 450 - useability it was plenty on the track we were playing on, much easier on the tight stuff. Like hens teeth though.
