Richie's a good man to work with... but he hates to take a step back and just look on... I'm working on him, but his delegation skills need improvement

Mind you, that might be something to do with the fact that the first job he delegated to me (ie reading the manual) was royally and totally screwed up

Asymetric port timing, TDC as such, ie when the pistons are at their closest point isn't actually TDC on both pistons so that the inlet and exhaust ports aren't open at the same time, (well, they are, but no more then they really need to be).

For fuller explanation Google: Napier and Deltic, an engine originally developed from marine diesels which ended up in railway engines, using a similar principle (ie no valves or cylinder heads for a compact high comp motor), but had three cranks in a triangle and six pistons per bank, also a blown two stroke diesel.

Y'see, that I understand.
Someone's starts wittering about wireless routers or computer programming - meh, that's a magical mystery tour!

Give me big greasy machines that actually get better when you hit them with a hammer (as opposed to ending up in tiny plastic bits) anyday.

Right-O Sir, but explain this please: why would the designer do what you say? If the pistons were perfectly opposed, one might realistically expect perfect balance. Then, to get the right port timing for scavenging or whatever, one would simply machine the ports higher/lower.......

(Do you know, this is a VERY interesting thread....aren't we lucky that Numbers smashed his box. Without that, we would never have had this duiscussion!!!)

On Ricihie's lovely little diagram I fail to locate the Foo Foo valve and Scriternoid,is this a deliberate oversight per chance?
