Ok just had the big service and noticed the fuel economy is still very poor compared to what I'd like (I got less than 35mpg on the last fillup). I am assuming that there is nothing obviously wrong with the bike as it would have been picked up in service, plugs were totally fine etc..

What can I test to see if its always stuck in "choke" mode etc. My journeys are mostly very short town commutes with occasional weekend hooning. It's probably a lot to do with my riding style and short trips but overall I'm getting a bit annoyed with the fuel usage.

i would say that's the problem, short journies of stop starting at lights etc and if you're giving it the beans away from the lights every time you're never going to get great mpg. also if you're a heavy person it's not going to help.

TBH that's what I think it is but that mpg still seems very low. I see reports of people ragging bikes that don't get as bad economy but maybe it's because they are on il4s..

i don't think it's IL4's in particular, because i normally get 155 miles before the light even comes on, but i'm only 11.5 stone before my kit etc and i ride fairly conservatively on open roads for my 11 mile each way commute.

I'm probably just over 18st with my gear on etc. I do 60 mile round trip each day. Half is A road and if its possible I sit at anywhere between 70 -90 mph. The rest is through London traffic and is all 1st, 2nd gear stuff with lots of stop starts etc.

When I first got the bike it was just over 50mpg but that plummeted with the dynojetted carbs. Put my standard carbs back on last week and I've noticed straight away MPG is back up. Amazing how a tiny enlargement in MJ size affects economy so much!

I use http://www.spritmonitor.de/en to monitor fuel economy and you can add reminders at mileages or dates etc. Obviously i mess up at times so its not 100% accurate but you get the gist. Check this link for other Sv650s and click the following icon and you should see my fuelling record.

The bike is brand new- running her in (514 miles as we speak) - keeping the revs below 5500rpm I have so far achieved 57.4, 62.7 & 64.4 MPG the tank was just short of full when delivered but the three times I have filled it so have been to the ledge in the tank. I am keeping a detailed record of ODO & fuel. The bike is running me in as well! - Doubtless when I get used to being back on a bike (the last one was 1979) the consumption will rise a tad Oh, no accessories or luggage but 82 Kilos plus full set of leathers boots etc. so probably all up around 100Kgs.

I am showing 190.1 miles after my ride yesterday and its still running! My fuel light has a mind of its own after my electrical problems last year. It blinks faster than it used to and i assume its on the 2nd stage! Yesterdays ride was a mixture of riding, most of which was fiarly gentle, but not constant throttle work, and a couple of, shall we say, exhuberant(sp?) riding spurts (Read 10k in top!)

I've done 125 miles on the bike and didn't see the reserve light... I'm pleased with the economy of it so far!

It's a bit upsetting reading how much it used to cost to fill up compared to now
