It's the gear box. it's not in good order, yes it needs to take a visit to the dentist as it has a few broken teeth and completely broken off a selector fork.

Lots of oily metal there in those pics, is that tool for the cams to keep them in position (photo 34).

It's just a guide to keep the chain on the cams incase of a slack chain tensioner I belive.
