I drank some of mine today, I didn't take the SG of it but I reckon at around 7%. I let it ferment out till it stopped bubbling and cleared, I'm very pleased with it, very tasty and very alcoholic, not at all bad for apple juice from concentrate and a bit of caster sugar, 4l for the princely cost of £2.50 (the juice was on 2 X 4litres for £5) + a small amount of sugar. Fantastic
![]() So I've started #2 today, only difference was to use some yeast improver stuff. |

So if I leave it in the DJ for longer than a week it will be clearer and have less sediment?
Mine has started to clear now, after bottling 4 days ago, but there is quite a lot of sediment. |

Yes, it'd clear. Though I've read that if you leave it "too long" it can develop off tastes. That's a very vague statement though so not of much use. My first batch is lovely and clear, it had nearly two weeks in the demijohn, and by a week or so later I had a lovely clear pint. |

I tried one of my first batch which is apple and pear, tasted quite alcoholic but not as sweet as I hoped it would be. Also wasn't particularly clear either. It had 8 days in the DJ, 7 days at room temp after i bottled it and then about 12 days in the fridge.

I've got apple and pear going at the minute, it's slowed right down but I'm leaving it to ferment out.
I primed my apple and raspberry with apple juice which I'm hoping will sweeten it up a bit, as my first batch isn't as sweet as I'd like. My first batch has now been in bottles about 20 days so they're ready to go in the fridge soon ![]() |

Where's all the Southwest lot to go "Oooh ahr boy" a lot and tell us that proper cider isn't supposed to be clear?

My second lot is going so fast that the bubbles are every second. Yesterday being so warm helped it on quite a bit. Plus I found we have a homebrew shop here in Shrewsbury, which has a huge range, and is cheaper than Wilkos. They sell DJs from recycled glass at £2.50 - I paid £5.49 in Wilkos - and a tub of yeast was £1.15, as compared to 69p in Wilkos for a small sachet that contained hardly any.
http://www.brewgenie.co.uk/ Incidentally I siphoned off my first lot into a clean DJ, it's now very clear, but I will be doing a secondary fermentation of it soon. Last edited by Ed; 24-06-09 at 09:34 AM. |

Next week my girlfriend's mum is bringing me up 10 demijohns.
![]() My pear cider has been going for ages and shows no signs of clearing. Not too bothered though. Same with my scrumpy style apple, it's a nice colour, not bothered if it stays cloudy ![]() |
