I always found vinegar flies would end up in my airlocks, so I'd recommend using them rather than going without - another tip I would suggest is that when you fill the airlock up, put a tiny amount of bleach in that too, stops any water-borne bacteria spreading back from the airlock into the demijohn

What do you use for bottling? Do you have to use glass, or would clear plastic bottles be ok as long as theyre sealed?
Thanks. |

as long as you can sterilise it and then seal the top properly, plastic is just as useable as glass

So long as they held pressure before they'll be fine.
I wouldn't use normal water bottles though.

Two litre fizzy pop bottles are just fine, plus when you open it, you have to drink it all!

Ahh i see. In that case, even the smaller pepsi and coke bottles would be good? I can get plenty of the 330ml ones from work because most staff drink them like water.
I must say, im quite looking forward to this. I cant wait to get all the gear from boots tomorrow and some nice cheap apple juice from a supermarket. Ill post pics when i get it set up. |

Yeah they work fine but reduce the priming sugar accordingly

Any plastic bottle that has had a pressurised drink in will work. So yeah, they'll be fine. Read up a bit on the net, and re-read the bits about sterilising. A single bacteria will make the whole thing go off!
56p / litre is the cheapest apple juice I've found. Morissons is the best if you can get it (it's like syrup ![]() |
