And what have you done to prevent the exposed Aluminium from corroding and the corrosion from getting underneath the protective coating on the calipers and making them go scabby in time ?

You can clean as much as you like , corrosion happens even in the natural environment . What I am concerned about is the fact that you have broken the surface of the coating on the calipers and corrosion will creep under the coating and attack it from underneath where you can`t get to it . Spill some Brake fluid in that area by accident as well and it could be accelerated and peel the Caliper paint right off .

Interestingly enough , I have been looking into getting a set of calipers painted , I have spied a set I am after but they need a refurb and have hunted around on the net for ways to get them painted/coated and have stumbled across many horror stories . One guy had treated his with caliper paint , lacquered them and then fitted them and managed to well and truly wrinkle the paint after a day because he didn`t let the paint harden . Another spilt a dribble of fluid on them and burned the paint off ........... makes you think about it doesn`t it ? I might go the Powder Coating route , or my preferred method of anodising , will see how much it costs . |

I can't see the appeal of showing off the fact that we have Tokico brakes...

Anodising would be the "Hardiest" finish . The Aluminium is exposed to a current and is suspended in Sulphuric Acid . Aluminium Oxide forms on the surface of the part that has been Anodised , but this is porous . This is where you can transfer it to a Dye bath and it colours in the pores on the Aluminium Oxide that forms on the surface . It is then "Sealed" by keeping it in a bath of boiling water for 30 minutes to an hour . The finish is quite hard but can be scratched through as the Aluminium underneath it is actually softer than the Anodised surface itself .
And as Swin has stated , they are Tokico`s , they do exactly what they say on the tin , but are nothing special . Last edited by xXBADGERXx; 08-11-09 at 09:24 AM. |
