10a = 9.99

Therefore 10a - a 9.999 - 0.999 is incorrect it should read 9.99 - 0.999

which then gives the correct answer 8.991

Simple really
You missed the crucial ... which means literally "and so on" and is used to show a repeating pattern, in this case 0.999999999999999999999999999999999 (recuring to infinity)

Work is out again with this crucial difference and the linked page is quite correct

Exactly! Which is why Spannerman's explanation doesn't add up either.

My maths is only incorrect if you accept the concept of infinity.

Personally I don't - to everything there must be an end.

Moving on - if there is an end, then 10a - a will always result in 8 followed by a finite number of 9's and the final number will be a 1

That's a shame, how do you show 1/3 in decimal form then?

Even not terribly complex maths needs infinity, but I get your point. I was meaning proper maths not just adding up and taking away.

I like this other proof that 0.999...... = 1

1/3 = 0.333...

3 x 1/3 = 1

3 x 0.333... = 0.999...

therefore 0.999... = 1

I love maths
