Good work MattCo, are you riding the SV or the GS?

St Maxime near St Tropez to Calais, over the water then spent 4 hours in Dover at my sister's before heading to Bedford. This was with full camping kit strapped to the back of a VF400F in 1988 (I left the ex-girlfriend down there cos she'd seriously p1ssed me off). I haven't a clue how many miles it was, but I had to do the St Tropez to Calais bit in a certain amount of time to catch the ferry I was booked onto.
EDIT - I just worked it out on AA Autoroute; 870 odd miles from St Maxime to Dover with just 5 hours sleep breaking the journey. Surprising what you'll do when you're angry. My idiot girlfriend of the time insisted we stay an extra day in the South of France and it was a mad rush then for me to get home. Needless to say I dumped the stupid cow as soon as she got home. Hull ferry terminal home to the far north of Skye. 514 miles all in the pouring rain - made what should have been fun absolute torture. Never been so wet in my life !!!!
Spent an hour and a half in the bath - topped it up with hot water about 5 times ...... Wasn't uncomfortable or sore though (or maybe my mind has just blotted out the really bad bits !!!) |

The first 1300mi was on the SV and is about all I can take on that bike - I have done 1300mi days on the SV several times now. The rest was on the old GS.

475 miles, all but 11 miles on twisty mountain roads.
Several times that. It's the trip to "Deals Gap" (aka the dragon) from my house. One trip the last 100 miles in drizzling rain and 3 degree (celsuis) temps.

I've always found French Autoroutes to have very frequent service areas. I'm glad they do because the VF400 was emptying the tank every 100 or so miles. It's not so much of a problem on the Versys as I can stretch a tank of fuel (19 litres) out to 250 miles if needed

Done 500-600 on the SV, on the 750 700 would easily be doable. It's the mind not the machine that's important.

I did Monaco - Edinburgh in just under a day and a half. No breaks bar an hour stop in London. No motorways in France either.
1265 very painful miles. I would say that was about 32 hours worth of riding in 36 hours. A lot of it spent riding very economically as I was running out of money. ![]() |
