That be my point on them bigger machines. They arent what i would call 'fun' on the lanes.

Sayin that my 530 keeps chuckin me off! Thats heavy enough (for me anyways) i was sweating like a stuck pig this mornin and was only out a coupla hours. Enjoyed it so much i went out again after work. At one point i was laughing so much i couldnt pick the bike up Will keep me fit lol

Took the Akrapovic off coz i kept scuffing it, but may put it back on coz bike seems to get hotter with standard can. AFAIK standard jetting too . I prolly just wasnt going fast enough

Mine gets hot in the slow stuff, but that should be OK, it's liquid cooled.

I would think the bike running hotter with standard can is normal, it hits more restriction on it's path to the exit, unlike your akro which is hardly restrictive

oh and an update for the madlaners megathread guys - not been around lately as my mum is really ill, my dad has asked me to step up and take a load of his work on while he looks after her so I've been busy & distracted with other things...

As for DR-Z/XT hunting, I've had some time to absorb and reflect on the whole idea. I've gotten my usual autumnal/winter itchy feet and decided to sell my GSX-R as I've gotten everything I've wanted from it this year (track days, kneedown, proving to myself that I can get round corners quicker than I could before) and now I'm bored. I'm off to Craigs Bikes a few miles away this lunchtime to test ride the sexy orange one on the pedastal:

It'll be better at touring, carry a pillion and luggage, more comfy, doesn't need to do 120mph to raise a smile, tonnes of accessories available to make it 'mine' (and waste more money on), it'll cope with a little bit of off-roading (I fully accept this will be a monster to handle off road/pick up) but still commute & do all the stuff I already do on said gsx-r..... and I've really fallen for the chunky ruggedness of it. It kind of reminds me of me...

Only catch is I'm not buying this particular 950 because it's 40,000 miles, £4300 with no service history whatsoever (no dealer stamps or receipts from previous owners) and the dealer has said he's not going to devaite from £4300 at all. Main thing is to make sure me and the bike get on with each other, then I can focus off selling gsx-r bits before finding a good example which has evidence of being looked after.

Feel free to try and put me off with horror stories of water pumps or clutch slave cylinders

Hope you've all been behaving yourselves while I've been away

You'll do flat firm dirt tracks no problem, but he likes of the planned Wales weekend, you may find there are bits of it that it just can't do. Too much weight.

For instance what happened to me in Portugal on the old XLR500. Went over the brow of a hill on a dusty gravelly fire road with trees on both sides, saw how steep the other side was, running down to a sharp corner at the bottom that I was too fast for. Jammed on the back brake to try and slow the bike down but the rear tyre just slid along behind me and the bike didn't slow down at all as the rear tyre was just overwhelmed by weight, momentum and gravity. I was a total passenger as the bike careered down the hill and I shat myself! Luckily once the slope flattened off at the bottom I got the speed down enough to make the corner! I would gone straight on and hit a tree on a 990.

Also when you do drop it (which you will on your first off-road outing) and break the plastics, you'll cry!

Don't off road on your own, 'cos if you end up in a ditch you'll never get it out. I did that a month or two back on the XT (160kg) and that was bad enough, never mind a bike that's 100kg more.

You'd be better off with an Adventure S, prep'ed up with engine bars, etc, if it must be a 950/990. Look at the AR pics at The Lone Wolf's bike.
