Default More fun with R6 end cans

If you read SV Rider as well, you may have already seen these exact posts

Finally got my Remus, and did a little more playing with the Akra before I sell it...

Some numbers: I ran each setup at idle, 4000rpm and 7000rpm, measured at 1m from the can exits directly behind with my oh-so-precise mobile phone db meter. Don't even think of considering these numbers to be accurate But they're good for comparison. The distance was the same for all the setups. I didn't run everything at all the speeds though, I'm not that much of a d***

No can at all:
106db at idle, 115db at 4000, no run at 7000.

My normal stubby WRP full system:
98db at idle, 109db at 4000, 113db at 7000

Remus with removable baffle in:
97db at idle, 109db at 4000, 113 at 7000

Remus with removable baffle out:
100db at idle, 111db at 4000, 114db at 7000

Akrapovic with baffle in:
101db at idle, 113db at 4000, 117db at 7000

Akrapovic with baffle out:
104db at idle, 114 at 3000 (didn't run to 4000 or 70000)

Also, weight- the Remus is very solid, and weighs in at 1408g. Lot of ironmongery in it... The externals are titanium but I think the main baffle and the removable one are both steel. It's a traditionally baffled can. The Akra, on the other hand, is all titanium and made like a beer can. With the baffle in, 355g! The Remus has a bigger bracket though. The Micron was between the two, it was 1400g including packaging when I posted it away, but I'm not sure how heavy the can alone was. I don't have numbers for the WRP, but including its link pipe it's about the same as the remus I think.

So, there's some numbers. Akrapovic = too loud, in either configuration. With the baffle in, I'd say it sounds like a rabid Harley Also a lot like it does with no can at all, but without the echoeyness and poonk-poonk-poonk effect. With the baffle out, it's just a flanged pipe and unsurprisingly sounds very much like a bike with no can. At low revs, with the baffle in it sounds fantastic. At high revs, pretty rubbish.

The WRP's not quiet, but it's not outrageously loud either. It's a typical race can, shortened to about 14 inches if memory serves me right. Slightly louder than I'd like in an ideal world, to be honest, but it's not loud enough to get me in trouble with the law, or killed by my neighbours, and it's music to my ears Very rich overrun. Sounds a bit like a Remus Revolution, but softer and deeper.

The Remus somehow sounds louder than the WRP, despite being quieter at idle and similiar everywhere else. I think it's less directional... Maybe a 90 degree measurement would give a different result. It's very nice sounding, a lot like a normal Remus Revolution with a touch more snarl. With the baffle in, it does sound obviously muffled, which is uncommon with Remus- usually they're just quieter, but at idle this has a hint of restriction to the sound.

The Micron... No figures for it, it's already fitted to a GSXR 7/11 in Finland But it was, I would say, louder than the Remus. Sounded like a bag of ****, very flat and brackish, much like a badly lean or carb icing bike does, despite the bike fuelling OK.

In terms of performance... No idea I'll not be riding the bike with the Akra, but I'd suspect it'll be free up top and maybe lacking in mids. The Remus is just a funny shaped exhaust can, with the baffle in I suspect it might be slightly more restrictive than a normal can, but the small size may counter that.

Fit... Remember, I have a nonstandard exhaust system, your mileage may vary. The Akra and Remus have the same i/d and o/d,about 46mm and 48mm. Both are cut, as though they fit inside the R6 headers. Strangely, the Micron is smalelr at about 46mm od, so it actually fit inside my WRP system.

The Akra and the Micron fit beautifully- the Micron slips straight into the header, and clears the swingarm like it was designed for the SV. The Akra needs an adapter of some sort (in the pics, a Holts exhaust repair bandage ;D) but otherwise, fits a charm, since it's so small. THink of it as a flared linkpipe.

The Remus does not fit : Well, not as easily. I had to space the exhaust out to the right (which it did not like at all, very closely toleranced this system) and it still barely clears the swingarm, even with the can sticking out. Not happy with the position or the look.

Pics to follow in seperate posts, this 'uns a bit big!

Pics: Yes, I know it's festering. Couldn't be bothered to clean it up. And yes, the luggage rack is made of wood

Akrapovic:

I didn't notice how squint it was- but rest assured it'd hang properly, if I'd just been more careful.

Remus Powercone:

It both sticks out too much, and fails to clear the swingarm by enough for comfort, and it doesn't flow.. Work is needed.

Just for completeness, some old pics of the Micron

And just to spice it up, my old WRP twin system

And the WRP, which is the bike's usual exhaust

I know... Best of the bunch from that point of view. It didn't really fit the bill for what I wanted it to do, but still, wish it had worked out But on the other hand, i did sell it for a profit

That Micron sure does suit the curvey. Any idea on what caused the bike not to run properly? I think the Akrapovik would look ok on a pointy - have you seen this done yet?

Oh, it ran just perfectly. It just sounded rubbish. It's a very light, thin construction without much baffling material. There's a GSXR equivalent that's a bit bigger, and a Fazer thou one that's humungous, they'd probably both be better but the size is offputting.

Then, I've never heard a Micron I liked...
