The tank will come off without spilling fuel but you might as well run it down as empty as you can first.
Keep the fuel cap closed. Remove the front seat, lift the tank, disconnect the hoses from the fuel tap and the drain under the tank and disconnect the fuel sensor. Then lower the tank and remove the hinge bolts at the rear of the tank. Lift the tank off - no petrol will come out. If you're in the garage/shed, take it outside for the next stage. I just needed to get most of the fuel out of mine so I just opened the fuel cap and turned the tank upside down over a big funnel into a petrol can. I presume you'll be taking the fuel tap off the bottom rear of the tank to refit to your new one? If so you can get the fuel out there when you take the tap off and then you can decant it into your petrol can. If you're anything like me you'll likely splash a bit of petrol when decanting in to the can, so do it outdoors. And put your fag out first. Last edited by TamSV; 21-08-10 at 11:25 PM. |

I took my tank off, balanced on a large bucket then kept priming the fuel pump (FI) until 99% of the fuel had come out, worked pretty well.
