Don't get me wrong, this is most definitely a big deal. As far as I can work out the officers had no power to seize the bike and they certainly don't have any authority to "test" how much power the engine is producing. I'm just waiting for the OP to come back and tell us how the officers intend to dig themselves out of the hole they have got themselves into. What I am saying is until they do that there is no point the Op going to his MP, the press, his mum, or anybody but the police.

The system does need to learn to appreciate this and make a bit more effort to make sure folks understand what is going on!
Of course it's something! I'd be absolutely livid/upset/worried/anxious you name it! IMO it's an infringment of human rights and typical of the state control we now have to live with - ordinary law abiding people are easy pickings

I guess I didn't word that very well, hence my subsequent post.....

This issue is definitely something to worry about, which is why I'm taking such an interest in it. What I was referring to there was all the other times the system comes under fire (Stig's post was a good example). He didn't understand how it worked and as a result had concerns over the outcome.

If I was in this position I sure as hell wouldn't have any certificate or plate declaring a restriction. There is no legal requirement to do this, and it really hacks me off that you younger people have to resort to these measures to be able to ride bikes with no hassles. It bloody stinks in my opinion.

You do not legally have to produce anything that states your bike is restricted, so why the hell should you have to carry anything like a certificate. It's Big Brother all over again and as I said earlier it'll be ID cards next, just so we can prove who we are when the police stop us in the street for no good reason. The last time this sort of thing happened was between the world wars in Germany.

Also, the whole bike test system has been geared up to force people off bikes altogether and this kind of high handed attitude by these two coppers has done nothing to help other people in the area and friends of the OP choose a bike over a car.

Lozzo, it's all very well you getting on your pedestal and saying what's wrong with the system but how about offering an alternative solution? Are you suggesting a 17 year old should be able to ride an R1 straight after passing his test or did you have some other way of introducing experience to riders in mind?
The current legislation with regard to 'restricted" bikes isn't perfect and it's a nightmare for the police to enforce, as has been seen here, but the principal is fairly sound.
If you want to start a debate on ID cards go ahead and fire up another thread, just bear in mind the Uk is just about the only country left in the world, let alone Europe, where you don't have to carry some kind of ID when driving a motor vehicle. You enjoy the relative freedom you have in the UK because the majority of people still support the principal of law and order, if you want to live in an anarchy move to somewhere in Africa or South America and see how you get on!

there was talk of making the 33bhp ruling so you cant restrict your bike which would work i know its annoying if you have to buy a 250-400cc machine for 33bhp for 2 years then a big bike at the end of your restriction period but it would mean your bikes not going to get seized. this is one of the reasons Kawasaki invested money into making the ZX250R which only makes 30bhp. would this not work better?
To implyment it simply state anyone who passes theres after a date is stuck on a 33bhp bike but if you passed your test before then you ride a restricted bike or would part confuse most police more than it is atm?
