I haven't heard anything more from Flameboy since the Inspector had been round to inspect his bike. I suspect not a lot will happen now until he gets a cheque and knowing how slow the wheels can sometimes turn that might be a little while.

With regard to carrying the certificate I think I'd be in YC's camp, especially after what has been discussed in this thread. Any evidence you have to hand to demonstrate your bike is restricted would be useful if challenged and it wouldn't exactly be to much trouble to keep a copy of any certificate you might have in a plastic bag under the seat (along perhaps with your tax disc?). Just because you don't have to do something doesn't mean it isn't a good idea to do it and the more evidence you have the more grounds the officer would have to find to disagree with you.

I thought the tax disc had to be displayed. Am I wrong in this?

+1, if you have a certificate or receipt for restrictor, a copy in a ziplock sandwich bag might be worthwhile to carry.(bear in mind a dodgy certificate you knocked up, or bought from McDodgy's Dealings on ebay might cause it's own problems)

Personally I would get Mcdodgy cert off ebay with previous owners name on it and date well in past. "Oh it came with the bike occifer".

You are actually restricted, with plausible deniability. Screwed if I'd pay FI international a bean.

Yes technically your tax disc should be displayed on the nearside in front of the rider.

What you do in real life has been subject to many a discussion on here already.

Interesting, I'd heard that before, but wasn't sure if it was true. The dealership who supplied my bike brand new, mounted it on the swingarm using one of the chain guard bolts. I assumed they would know if that was legal and I've never moved it. I don't display the actual disk though, just a colour photocopy. The holder is so covered in chain lube, you'd never know the difference. The original lives in my wallet.

I thought the rules were changed in the last few years so it is now simply "If there’s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle." as per Direct.gov

Quite possibly, it's been over 20 years since I learnt that piece of legislation and almost as long since a cared about it....

As long as you've got one that's fine by me.....but do be careful with photocopies, technically that's a forgery.....

The photocopy is to ward off over zealous traffic wardens when the bike is parked on the street, if a copper stops me I'll tell him straight off that it's a copy and produce the real one from my wallet to inspect. I figure if they are going to throw the book at me, they would have done me for failure to display anyway.

I personally don't see the issue with forgery, so long as you don't also commit fraud. You paid for the tax disk, so you should be allowed to make a copy, so long as you don't intend to try and use it on a different vehicle. I realise the law may not see it the same way as me, but I'd just have to appeal to the coppers better nature, and if that fails appeal to the magistrates better nature.

Same goes with music IMO, if you buy an album you should be able to make as many copies as you wish, for car, home, work computer, mp3 player, etc so long as you don't share or sell it. That's why I'll never have an iPod and buy music from iTunes. If I pay for it it should be mine to copy as many times as I wish and play on as many devices as I wish.
