I did the same, I bought the maplins one (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=226501) and then added an inline fuse and two circle battery connections. Cost about £6/£7 depending if you have other parts already or not, plus you can choose how long you want it.

I did think about making them to sell on eBay / Forum but too much hassle I think, lol.

did mie exactly the same as cbay....... mouthed on the front subframe, nicely tucked away and sheltered from the weather......... i took the plug apart and sealed it back together with black silicone but even still i have accidentally filled the plug up with water whilst washing and done no harm

On a suitably rated relay all you do is...
It will have terminals which you feed the positive to...
an open (N/O) (or closed circuit, depending on type of relay, N/C) basically this is just a break of contacts which close (or open) when energised,
Symbol normally looks something like this ./' or ._.

A positive signal or switched live and thats it, i took mine from lighting circuit.

Feed the positive directly from the battery with an inline fuse preferably to the one side of contacts or whatever it is on relay, other side goes to feed to the cigarette lighter, make sure its a decent size cable as well, something around 2.5mm Sq multi strand.
You can take the negative from battery also (you'll need to supply both relay and cigarette lighter with a neg)

Take signal from lights or another ignition 'on' only source and feed the relay (this is the one that energises the relay)
Thats it really, i could show you in 5 mins, lot harder to explain in text.
By all means if you wanna call me when you're doing it and i can help over phone, but its very easy once you understand the symbols on the relay.

Sounds like a very complicated way of wiring in something that could be simply fed via the little used horn circuit. These power sockets are usually rated at 120W, so only need a 10A fuse. Your average horn circuit is fused at 10A, so wiring it directly into that horn circuit will do the job nicely. Stick an additional 10A fuse in the power socket live feed if it worries you, but there's no need to slap relays all over your bike if you're sensible about what you wire into.

Its not complicated at all and its the correct way to do it imo, if you took it to an automotive technician to have one done im sure it would be like this, plus i was given a load of relays so had most of the stuff.
Factory ones will be stand alone as well.
Horses for courses, i prefer to do it my way cos i know it wont give me any grief.

If i fitted one of these and connected it directly to the battery and left it without anything plugged in would it still flatten the battery, and how long would that take??

Nope it doesn't drain the battery, as nothing is plugged in their is no power being pulled out.

My ready made one is still working perfectly and used on almost every ride, very simple and I know there are better ways to install one (i.e. not directly connecting it to the battery) but as long as I don't forget to unplug anything that's in, I have no reason to mess around with anything better.

Thats the risk you have though, directly to the battery, my way you cant.
But as long as the socket has no LED on it or anything then it shouldnt affect the battery at all if there is nothing plugged in.
