are you looking new or second hand.. if new the shop "might" let you have a spin on a second hand bike.. worth a try.
those that dont let you its probably an insurance thing, and believe me the insurance for bike shops is astronomical |

No point tuning the 650 unless you really like how it handles. The best part of £1000 will see you up to 85bhp or so and the same again spent on suspension will have it handling better than anything else on the road. So it can be well worth playing with. Depends how and what you ride. If you want to lazily chug your way around on open roads and occasionally blat up to some unmentionables when you find a straight bit, buy the thou. If you want to remove your brain for a bit and hoon around nadgery little B roads then take the 650 all day long. Not that the 650 isn't capable of the other stuff, it just requires twisting the throttle a bit further. The one different scenario, IMO, where the thou has a point is touring. The thou engine gets reasonable economy on a run and makes life easy, if I wanted a big comfy tourer I'd have a DL1000 all day. I don't understand this getting bored of bikes business TBH. Know a lot of people who are "bored" of their SV/bandit/small sportsbike while riding like complete poofters. Bored? Open the ****ing throttle!

I use my SV650 for commuting. Its quick enough and is thin and light to get through the traffic.
I always go the twisty way home through the B b roads, Its really satisfying to hold it flat out and enjoy the road. Im sure the though would be harder work (Had an RF900 10 years back that was wide)and not very much faster for me .

Possibly because when riding a large CC BHP bike, for weeks, months etc you learn to adapt to the fact that opening the throttle like on a small bike will result in a quick game of death. Once you've been on that large CC BHP bike for long enough, when you go 'backwards' you find that the throttle is unresponsive in comparison, the suspension inferior and although the respect is the same, you can't quite execute the same finesse as on the other. It does feel rather 'boring' You can extract the urine on say an SV(if thats what you wish out of a bike), because theres a limitation on what it can do.....the limitation is far higher for example raptor 1000, and you reallly wouldn't want to be using it the same. Its like going onto a 125 after riding nothing but an SV for a few years. Go back to SV do the same as on the raptor, and you are thinking.....EHHHHHHH its not doing owt ![]() I should imagine you can't get your head round it, as you've not really ridden something thats over 1000 or a bike thats got over 100BHp, for more than a few minutes, an hour or two in a day, so your not likely to feel it, or understand the sentiments of those that do. ![]() ![]()

I agree with YC on most points.
I have to say that 2 up the 650 is fairly gutless, but they are a hoot to ride around the twisties on your own. With a good rider on board they can embarrass quite a few sports bikes, being light & flickable. If you are looking at 2 up mile munching, then the thou would be my choice. I had one for a short period, but nearly fell over when I saw the MPG figures I was getting. I have a 955i Triumph which returns on average 48mpg, the SV1000 was giving me about 33! Dizzy, I agree entirely on your points about capacity. When I 1st rode the Triumph I nearly shat my pants when I started to ride at a spirited pace, it is so fast. I'm used to it now & jumping from that to the SV makes the SV feel completely gutless & I keep looking for problems that I dont think are actually there.

Oh, I've not shat myself MisterC.......well, not entirely. Theres been a few occasions where kitty has said
![]() ![]() ![]() I'm a lairy pussycat, do it again and I'll bite ya! Although once I did let the clutch out a little quickly, on the SV it would have done precisely nowt.....but Kitty nigh on ripped my arms out of their sockets, won't do that again!

Open throttle more, we've had some good do's on the SV, 2 up, with camping kit. Just needs a bit more forward planning.

It must be said the man makes a very good point.
