I was riding home this afternoon, making progress as usual, and the steering started to feel quite stiff.
I was on a main road, the bends were long and sweeping, and overtakes were all in straight lines so I didn't start to notice anything straight away. Fortunately is was a slow puncture rather than a blow-out. As it went down (over about 1/2 a mile) the feelings became more obvious until it felt like I was steering through sand. By this time I had slowed right down and pulled in to the next layby (which had just been stone chipped and really didn't help with controlling the slowing down ![]() I had both tyres fitted almost two years ago and just replaced the rear as it was down to the wear marks. Other than being square there wasn't a problem with it. Does anyone have any idea what would cause a tyre to blister like this? I fitted emulators earlier this year, and filled with new oil. Could this contribute? Could it be a manufacturing problem? I'd quite like to know if a new tyre is going to do the same ![]() |

contact the manufacturer they should never blister like you say (plus side is you'll likely get a new tyre)

I've called the place I got it from and I'm taking the wheel to them tomorrow, to leave it with them, so they can fit a new tyre on Monday. I'll have a word with them to see if they will look into this for me. Maybe I'll get a replacement, maybe a % off (I had a RoadAttack a few years ago that cracked badly in the tread and got 70% off a new one). Fingers crossed.

I had a Avon storm that had metal cords sticking out of the tread on the side of the tyre where there was 5mm left the centre was totally bald Avon still gave me a £25 cheque

I took the wheel in today and they got the tyre off. The inside of the carcas looked and felt thin so the manager is going to send it off and see if Dunlop will offer a discount for the replacement.
At least I'll have a full set of fresh rubber for the winter. |

I had exactly the same on my storm 2 ultra, I had it for ages and it got worse and worse, thought my wheel was out of balance at fist because it was bobbing around when I was riding. I spoke to Avon and they say that it's a single bound carbon fibre wire inside so if you get a puncture and it happens to snap the wire like it did with us it causes this strange blister

That sounds like it could happen from a puncture but there were no other issues with the tyre. It seemed obvious once the tyre was off that a blister had formed and burst due to some sort of de-lamination.

Sometimes a foreign object can enter the tyre but not penetrate through to the inner casing which separates the outer and inner casing and allows a blister to develop through time. The foreign object weakens this part of the casing as it lifts and can blow once lifted,no sign of said foeign object but a piece of tread missing is the result.

Ahh, could be that then. I always check my tyres after each journey to make sure there isn't anything stuck in them, just a hand sweep and quick look, but I guess I could have missed something small. Gutted.

I did start with "Sometimes",alternatively a bit of dirt on the inner casing during moulding can have the same result over a period of time.
By all means get the casing sent back, after all nothing ventured nothing gained. Best of luck. |
