The fan issue is probably a build up of fluff and dust inside the case. Even though mine lives on a desk in my study it is also getting very hot all the time now. I had it cleaned out a few years ago by a small local shop and the cost was silly. Now it's slowing down and getting hot again I will probably just buy a new one instead of repairing it again. It is about 8 years old mind...
One other problem with old laptops is the graphics. Daughter dearest bought Sims 3 a few months ago and found it will not run as the machine does not support Shader 2 (which is already obsolete). All the geek forums I hunted around on said there is nothing you can do about this error as the graphics card is built in to the chips in a laptop and you can't upgrade them. Think I'll get a desktop instead...
