What a fitting way to open a festival of remembrance.

I think what Gareth Malone is doing in giving the wives etc a voice is spot on. We all watch the news about events in Afghan & watch with all kinds of emotion when we hear of yet another brave serviceman/woman being killed or injured.

But what about the days when there isn't much on the news about it??? - the partners of those out there still have to go through their day to day routine not knowing. Obviously the news isn't going to report much about patrols/activity & stuff if they are aware that someone has been in an incident & immediate family members are still trying to be located. A friend of mine who was out there about 18 months/2yrs ago ago told me about a situation where someone was involved in some form of shooting/IED incident (he wasn't quite sure what) but the guys wife/girlfriend had gone to stay with her sister for a couple of days. The authorities were trying desperately to locate the sisters address & the media out there were only too glad to hold back for a bit until they could confirm family were aware.

I believe the reporting of a KIA isn't made public by the media until it's confirmed that NOK know.

The Choir programme is my eyes doing the right thing in bringing to the publics attention just what wifes & kids are going through.

Congratulations to the OP's wife/girlfriend for performing beautifully.
