It's not the police per Ce I suppose but more the prosecution.
I agree that everytime I've needed the police they have been fast to attend and do the do, but it's the follow up that seems to be lacking and I suspect that's out of their hands to some extent. Post rant come down yeah I'm sure the police did take "evidence" into consideration and in this case obviously figured that it wasn't worth it but given that it's my step sister I can't help feel a little differently. I mean short of the breaks not working or having an epileptic fit at the wheel I can't see how they can not get a successful driving without due care and attention prosecution. I had my bike damaged when it seems like it was dropped whilst being loaded onto the back of a van at 3am (woken by a crash and my alarm going and a vehicle skidding off after a couple of door slams) Bike laying in the middle of the road blaring it's heart out. PERFECT set of prints on the underside of the tank either side! Given the heavy weather and imaculate prints the SOCO that attended (Are all SOCO's attractive women?) figured there was no doubt they were very fresh and she rarely got them this good (Score!) Got told that it would take upto a few weeks for them to work out if the prints threw anything up then got a call not 2 days later asking if I could Identify someone in a line up. I explained that I didn't see anyone, the result? they were dropping the case due to lack of evidence 0_o It was "suggested" to me that someone who's prints were found on my bike could argue that they got there innocently (on my driveway at 3am underneath the tank either side...) and that there wasn't enough to pursue a case with.... It came down to me hoping that the crims get done ripping off another bike and confess to trying to knick mine in a plea bargain, not that I'll get anything out of that. I guess it's similar, if you're a crim unless you provide a video footage of yourself on youtube and a written confession there isn't much the law is willing to do as without an iron clad conviction it does indeed end up wasting tax payers money.
