The Oyster Card seems right up my street...especially for the tube. Kids are free (U11)...substantial 'apparent' savings with the Oyster thingy... anyone got a BAD word to say about them?...


(Sorry - you know what it's like...missus asks lots of questions. Left to us blokes we'd just go and get the card and be done ...left to the women folk, they like to ask who, how, why, if, but, maybe etc and then some...I'm just covering all bases because it's me job!!)

from what ive heard Oyster Cards are rubbish if you dont use them a lot but i also think that a one day family travel card (i'm sure i heard they do those now) is the best value.

Fizzy Fish is our resident TFL expert so hopefully she'll be along soon with her pov.

Failing that try www.tfl.gov.uk, its also very helpfull for route planning if youre not sure how to get from A - B in the thick of the smoke

ok now listen carefully cos the ticketing thing is a bit complicated like, and even i had to ask someone!

Kids under 10 can travel free on buses, tubes etc with no need for photocard ID (as long as they are accompanied by an adult)

Kids between 10 and 16 get some freebies, but i think you need a photocard, so not really worth doing if you're just here for a day or two

Adults/older kids are best off getting an Oyster card at a tube station, and loading money onto it. You have to pay a deposit of £3 for the card, but if you're not likely to be back in London again, you can get this back if you return the card to a tube station before you leave.

Once you've done this you can just travel around and the card automatically works out the best fare for you. You need to hold the card against the yellow reader when you go through the tube station barriers at both ends of the journey. On buses you just swipe it against the reader when you get on.

It is very easy to get them, but would save you the deposit & getting it back at the end. I would just leave you to load them up when you get here to use them - which you can do at a machine instead of potentially queing for a person.

That's a very kind offer Stu. In fact it's beyond kindness (wherever that is!)

But there could be a problem with that...what if we don't make it to London for some reason?

AND what if I load the card with too much wonga? It might be easier to buy one on auto top up and then toss it back into the 'oyster hut' in paddington.

I have heard today from a nice chap on the phone that The Lion King is aimed at those 6 years and over....the little chap will be 3 years and ten months at the intended time....could be a problem.

Scenario one - buy ticket...get to Lyceum and then refused entry. Money wasted.

Scenario two - buy ticket...get into Lyceum...little chap gets pi$$ed off because it's a long show for a chap of his age and so starts to annoy others in the vicinity - end up leaving theatre with red faces. Money wasted - street cred in steaming pile!!


Oh the trials of indecision....
